Bad Beaver Ultra

The Bad Beaver Ultra is a 3-day, 150km, semi-supported stage race that takes competitors through many of the unique and wondrous aspects of one of Canada’s most historic and scenic parks – the Gatineau Park.

The race starts at base camp at the Lac Philippe Campground. From there, racers first work their way through the beautiful trails of the Lac Philippe area (including through the Lusk caves), before snaking along the Pontiac equestrian trail at the base of the Luskville escarpment on the North side of the Park. Racers then make the steep ascent of the escarpment at Luskville Falls up to the Fire Tower, before eventually descending back down and along the beautiful Meech Lake. Racers are then asked to make the long climb up to Champlain Lookout, on to Camp Fortune, around King Mountain, and through the Mackenzie King Estate, before enjoying the fun descent to the Visitor’s Centre in Old Chelsea.

The race is divided into three main sections of approximately 55k, 70k, and 25k, for a total distance of about 150km. Throughout the race, competitors are expected to carry all of their own gear and in-race food for the event, with the exception of their evening meals which are provided each day at camp!

Cut-Off Times

Cut-offs will be imposed starting in 2019. For participants’ safety and comfort, we want to ensure that everyone has enough time to eat and rest before starting the next stage. Please note that participants who are not meeting cut-off times will not be pulled from the race if they are fit to continue; instead, they will be skipped ahead to a forward CP. These participants will be able to complete the remainder of the race if they wish, but will not qualify for UTMB points. The following cut-offs speeds will be in effect for 2019 and monitored at key CPs along the course:

  • Stage 1: avg. speed of 4.50km/hr
